La Maison de Bernadette

La Maison de Bernadette is an eco Bed and Breakfast using local and organic produce. The property is a combination of an old Pyrenean house and barn. It is situated on the slopes of the Hautacam, a mountain known and loved by cyclists in the summer and skiers in the winter.

Relaxing and taking in a big breath of clean mountain air are good ways to sum up what life in the Pyrenees is like. Locally the area is well known for its gastronomy and its wine, the many spas that occupy the valley and the Pic du Midi site and the nature parks.

La Maison de Bernadette is situated in the heart of the National Park and close to UNESCO World Heritage Sites. So you don’t have to be into mountain sports to be into the Pyrenees.

Vegan breakfast

Every morning a healthy, organic and energy packed (vegan) breakfast is served in the large dining room. There is a choice of cereals, rice/almond milk, fresh fruit, biscots/bread, jams, homemade goodies, a choice of teas, coffee, freshly made juice and a selection of dried fruits. We can also prepare your evening meals and picnics (these meals need to be reserved in advance and are at an extra cost).

Our home is a large Bigourdane style mountain house that has been lovingly renovated. The living room and dining room are both communal spaces and have spectacular views over the mountains and valleys. The living room is a wifi zone, has a self service bar and there are plenty of board games, books and films to choose from. The dining room has a traditional handmade Basque table, large Bigourdane open fireplace and is where the breakfast buffet can be found. The wifi access available onsite is free.

For all guests wanting to prepare their own meals or picnics there is a fully equipped kitchenette in the barn. The washing machine is also available on request.
In the upstairs of the barn is a large 8 person shared sleeping dortoir, perfect for groups. People sleeping in the barn have access to a shared outdoor solar shower.

Permaculture garden

The large garden that surrounds the house and barn is unfenced and pesticide free. This wonderful permaculture garden with it’s panoramic views of the mountains has lounging and eating areas for you to rest and relax. We have planted lots of fruit trees and grow our own organic vegetables. The garden is home to our friendly cat ‘Captain Bob’, and our free ranging ducks. We have lockable equipment storage is available on request.

Location

La Maison de Bernadette is located in the rural village of Artalens on the road to Hautacam, close to Argeles-Gazost, Lourdes, Gavarnie and the Tourmalet pass.

We are close to the airports of Lourdes (33km), Pau (83km), Biarittz (188km) and Toulouse (196km). The dual carriageway stops only ten minutes away from the house making access easy by car. From the North of France, where many ferry boats arrive, it takes less than a day to get here.
